WASHINGTON (AP) - The number of registered Democrats has fallen in key states carried by President Barack Obama in 2008 in what could be an early warning sign for his re-election campaign.

Democrats fared well among an estimated 15 million new voters in 2008, and party registrations soared prior to the 2008 election. But Democratic registrations have declined since the last presidential contest in states like Florida, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Iowa and Nevada - all important to Obama's re-election.

Obama faces the challenge of re-igniting his supporters while several states with Republican governors have tried to reduce the number of early voting days and required photo IDs to vote.
Democrats say the proposals are aimed at disenfranchising poor and minority voters.
