President Obama accepts McChrystal's resignation

President Obama has accepted the resignation of General Stanley McChrystal as head of military operations in Afghanistan.  He will be replaced by General David Petraeus.

During a speech outside the White House the President said he and McChrystal are in full agreement about the strategy in Afghanistan.  He said he has great respect for McChrystal.  He said McChrystal has earned a reputation as one of our nation's finest soldiers, one of deep intelligence, and deep love of country.

President Obama said military members must accept a strict code of conduct and must answer to our democracy as they serve.

He urged quick approval by the Senate for the appointment of General Petraeus.
