A drunk driver hit a utility box, triggering Memorial Hospital 's back-up power and knocking out power to about 8000 homes.

It happened on Boulder St. near Logan Ave. Springs police say the driver jumped the curb, ran into the transformer and was arrested for driving under the influence. Three people were in the car and a passenger was treated for minor injuries, police said.

Traffic lights between Boulder and Palmer Park on Union went out too. Power has been restored to the homes and the lights.

Hospital officials say patient care was not interrupted but the lights went out for a few seconds before the back-up generator went on.
