Some Pueblo County residents want county commissioners to make Xcel Energy shut down its new power plant until the utility can stop the noise that has driven some people out of their homes.

They asked commissioners for help Tuesday. Minneapolis-based Xcel says it will spend $1.5 million to muffle a high-pitched whine coming from the new coal-fired Comanche power plant in Pueblo. The baffles are expected to be in place by the end of April.

Xcel Energy has paid to house some of the neighbors in motels. The Colorado Public Utilities Commission has directed Xcel
Energy to file a report on the noise problems and propose a solution. City and county officials and utility customers have until April 9 to submit written comments.
