Colorado Springs Utilities has notified News First 5 of a massive power outage covering most of Southeastern Colorado Springs. A Utilities spokesperson said this is the largest outage in recent history and the sheer area of the outage was too vast to name all the bordering streets to give an exacting idea of the outage size.
Essentially the outage covered an area from the Citadel Mall, south to Drennan Road and from Chelton East to Powers. There was an estimated 6000 customers without power for part of the morning and currently 95% of the customers have had their power restored.
The cause for the outage has yet to be determined and Utilities crews expect to have the power back on for the remaining customers soon. Fire Stations and the Police Substation in the area were also affected by the outage, but operations were able to be continued without interruption. The outage also made for challenges in several intersections with traffic signals being knocked out for a short time.
We will update with the cause and full restoration once the information is available from Colorado Springs Utilities.
