Xcel Energy says it might have to reduce the amount of solar power it planned to buy because approval of a power line to transmit renewable energy has been delayed by a landowner opposed to it.

The utility expressed the concerns in a request Tuesday to cancel a hearing on the proposed power line so it can amend the plan it files with the state on projected energy needs.

Xcel Energy and Tri-State Generation and Transmission Association want to build a 140-mile power line in south-central Colorado to transmit solar power.

Billionaire Louis Bacon opposes building the line over his 171,000-acre ranch. A ranch spokesman says the utilities have ignored an alternative route that would deliver more power and cost less.
