Possible Leads on Mysterious String of Apartment Fires

Colorado Springs Fire Marshals have possible leads into a string of mysterious fires at the Sunset Creek Apartments, including the most recent one, early Saturday morning. There have been three small fires at the complex over the past two weeks and they don't appear to be accidents.

Investigators told News 5 there appears to be a clear pattern with these fires. They're all small, happen in the middle of the night inside the buildings of the complex. Fortunately, no one has been hurt and they've caused little damage, but investigators are working to get to the bottom who and how the fires are starting.

"I'm definitely worried a little bit but there's only so much you can do," said Sunset Creek resident, Dylan Stup.

Meanwhile, people who live at the complex are anxious.

"I mean I'm constantly wondering if I'm going to smell smoke when I wake up," said another resident, Charlotte Gilsner.

Some are unsure of what to make of the fires, but say it's concerning to say the least.

"I'm not sure what to think of it, obviously it's fire so it's bad," said Stup.

Many of the people who live at Sunset Creek Apartments, right on the edge of University Village, are students at UCCS.

"It's kind of shocking to wake up and have like five fire trucks right out your window with ladders on top of your roof," recalled Gilsner.

One of the fires was right outside of her apartment unit, in the hallway.

"If nobody found it at 3:00am, I would have never have known and it could have burned my apartment down," she said.

The Fire Department and Police are looking into everything said investigations supervisor, Deputy Fire Marshal Kris Cooper.

"Obviously we have a pattern of several fires and that's concerning to us," said Cooper.

At this point, he said the fires are being called suspicious, as they haven't ruled out any possibilities.

"We're not saying it's arson yet, like I said it's still under investigation," explained Cooper.

But some people are already convinced it is arson. Stup and Gilsner said they believe someone is setting these fires on purpose.

"There's just no way, because a door frame is lit on fire or a trash can. Someone is intentionally doing this which is just so bothersome," said Gilsner.

Stup said he thinks investigators will get to the bottom of it soon. In the meantime, he's being extra cautious.

"I'm definitely looking a little bit for suspicious activity, who wouldn't be because I don't want my building to burn down," he said.

Cooper said they aren't naming any suspects yet, but they do have some leads in the case.

"Nothing as far as as anyone we're pinning to this yet, you know we do have some information that we're working with," said Cooper. "But like I said any information that anyone has that they could bring forward would be important."

News 5 talked with apartment managers over the phone Monday afternoon, who wouldn't say anything about the fires or if they're taking any extra safety precautions, because the investigation is ongoing.
