Pueblo Police Chief Luis Velez says officers found a weapon near a Colorado Springs man fatally shot by police on New Year's day. Christopher Tavares, 21, is accused of firing at an officer and fleeing the scene early in the morning.
About an hour later, Tavares was located by a police detective in the area near Highway 50 and N. Elizabeth.
Velez says it looked like Tavares was reaching for something when he was shot and killed. Officers also point out, Tavares did not comply with the detective's commands.Police say they found a .40 caliber semi automatic near his body.
The officer who was shot remains hospitalized in stable condition.
The officer who shot Tavares has not been identified. He's currently on administrative leave.
