Police say Pueblo 3-year-old accidentally shot by a 5-year-old

PUEBLO -- Pueblo police say that a 5-year-old pointed a gun at a 3-year-old girl and shot her Monday morning at the 3200 block of Colfax. 

The child went into surgery after she was transported to a Colorado Springs hospital. She is in critical, but stable condition.The gunshot did not break any bones. 

A 9-year-old took a gun that was in the home and brought it into the backyard. The 5-year-old then handled the gun and shot the toddler, according to police. 

The 9-year-old said he knew how to handle the gun from video games, like Black Ops, according to police. 

The boyfriend of the mother of the 3-year-old victim, 22-year-old Adrian Chavez, fled the area. He had a no-bond warrant for failure to appear. Chavez was taken into custody around 3:15 p.m. and will be charged with Child Abuse resulting in Serious Bodily Injury for the firearm that was left unattended.
