Police say alcohol most common date rape drug

Pueblo police say the most dangerous date rape drug on the market, is something you can get your hands on at any bar: alcohol.

"Statistically 70% of victims and 90% of suspects have alcohol in their system, when there is a sexual assault," said Shelli Vahlbusch, a detective with the Pueblo Police Department's Special Victims Unit.

Detective Vahlbusch spoke about date rape to students at Pueblo Community College on Wednesday as part of student safety awareness week at the college. Other speakers included representatives from ACOVA, the Pueblo District Attorney's Office and the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.

Law enforcement told students some of the most common victims of date rape are people ages 18 to 25, although they pointed out women and men of all ages are affected.

"It's is a problem (in Pueblo)," said Det. Vahlbusch. "We see it quite frequently," she added.

Det. Vahlbusch says the majority of rapes aren't by committed by strangers. "You hate to say don't trust anybody, but even people who are your acquaintances--that is the majority of date rapes or sexual assaults. It's someone you know, someone you're familiar with," she added.

Experts say occassionally victims are too embarrassed or ashamed to report sexual assaults, however police say it's important to help catch the suspect and prevent further crimes.

"With the new laws, you can go to the hospital and get an examine done--that's doesn't mean you have to prosecute right away," said Det. Vahlbusch. "At least we get the evidence collected and we get everything we need so if a year done the road you decide to prosecute, we've already got that evidence," she added.
