The Colorado Springs Police Department is urging residents to be vigilant this holiday season. The department's crime analysts consider the holidays a "time of opportunity" for criminals as they notice a distinct increase in vehicle burglaries.

A department media advisory issued Tuesday morning encourages citizens to never leave valuable items in the car and to always lock the doors. The department further recommends shopping during the day, never parking in an unlit area. They encourage shoppers to always having their keys in hand as they walk to your vehicle and to scan the interior to make sure no one is hiding inside.

If packages must be left in the vehicle, the department suggests locking them in the trunk where they are out of sight.
