Pole vault champ returns to State Games

Colorado Springs - Kelli Ehardt, the first high school girl in Colorado to clear 13 feet in the pole vault, will be back again for the Rocky Mountain State Games in Colorado Springs.

The BYU sophomore set a national State Games of America record for female pole vaulting last summer in Colorado Springs when she hit 13-0 to win the gold medal. She has won the event in 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2008 in State Games competition.

The Rampart High product was fourth in the Mountain West Conference outdoor championships this spring with a vault of 12-9.5 and finished her sophomore year with a best of 13-3.44, among the best in the NCAA for women. She ranks #2 on BYU's all-time list for female vaulters now.

She won't be competing alone this time, either, because she's bringing along her little brother as a Games' entry.

Kyle Ehardt, 12, is competing in the shot put and discus events in his age group, and he qualified this year for the Junior Olympic Regionals in the shot.

Track and Field events are set for Lewis-Palmer High School on July 31 and August 1. As of Friday afternoon a total of 233 Colorado athletes have signed up for the sport.

Registration is still open for athletes in 33 sports at: www.coloradospringssports.org
