Larimer County sheriff's officials say a 54-year-old pilot from Wellington is safe after unexpectedly landing an experimental aircraft in a field in Loveland.

Sheriff's officials say the small aircraft had left the Fort Collins-Loveland Municipal Airport on Sunday morning and was flying at about 7,500 feet over Windsor when its engine "blew up" or broke apart. The pilot headed back and glided the aircraft into a field not far from the airport around 9:45 a.m.

The pilot was walking around when deputies arrived. He was the only person on board. Sheriff's officials didn't release his name. Sheriff's officials say the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating.
