It is a new era for Air Force basketball, or perhaps a time of transition. The Falcons fired head coach Jeff Reynolds Wednesday and now Dave Pilipovich takes over as interim head coach.
Pilipovich has been an assistant with the Falcons for four-plus seasons. Before that, he was an assistant with the Michigan Wolverines, Eastern Michigan, and Robert Morris, among others. Now he takes over an Air Force program that has lost six straight conference games. The Academy administration says he will have a chance to earn a job as permanent head coach.
"How many games we win, we don't know, but we're going to play hard, play with passion, and have fun," said Pilipovich. "If it turns out the administration wants to keep us on, then great. If not, then we'll support everything they do."
"Nobody likes to lose and I think that any change is good," said Air Force forward Taylor Stewart. "Coach Pilipovich is our head coach now and I think he brings a lot to the table in terms of excitement. Everyone in the locker room loves when he rallies the troops with us."
The Falcons are 11-10 overall and 1-6 in a very tough Mountain West Conference. They host Wyoming on Saturday night.
