Four C-130 Aircraft will join the fire fighting efforts on the west side of Colorado Springs.
Two aircraft will be coming from the 153rd Airlift Wing in Cheyenne, WY, and two aircraft will be from the local 302nd Airlift Wing in Colorado Springs, CO. The aircraft will be operating from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.
The MAFFS program is a joint effort between the U.S. Forest Service and Department of Defense. The U.S. Forest Service owns the MAFFS equipment and supplies the retardant, while the DoD provides the C-130 aircraft, pilots, and maintenance and support personnel to fly the missions.
Each aircraft can drop 3,000 gallons of water or fire retardant in less than five seconds covering an area 100 feet wide and a quarter mile long.
