The controversial animal rights organization People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) will use sex appeal to encourage locals to "go vegan" this week.

A news release issued Wednesday says the group's Lettuce Ladies, who wear bikinis made with strategically placed lettuce leaves, will be handing out samples of soy sausage at the corner of Pikes Peak and Tejon Thursday at noon. They will also be distributing literature about vegetarian and vegan diets.

Lettuce model Hayden Hamilton is quoted in the statement as saying, "with an abundance of delicious vegan choices now available, there's never been a better time to make the switch to a kinder, gentler, healthier diet."

Temperatures are expected to reach the mid 60's on Thursday. PETA protestors usually visit the community during the summer when the Ringling Bros. Barnum and Bailey Circus and the Pikes Peak or Bust Rodeo.
