AUSTIN, Texas (AP) - It's a move that is certain to shake up the race for the GOP presidential nomination.

A spokesman says Texas Gov. Rick Perry is running for president. He says Perry will make his intentions known on Saturday while visiting South Carolina and New Hampshire.

The announcement will come as most of his presidential rivals compete in a test vote in Iowa.

Tonight, eight candidates including Republican front-runner Mitt Romney will be appearing on stage during a nationally televised debate.

Perry has spent the past few months courting Republicans in early voting states, and laying the groundwork for a campaign.

Perry has credibility both with Republican fiscal conservatives as a pro-business tax-cutter who has presided over the state's recent economic growth and also as a devout social conservative with deep ties to some of the nation's evangelical leaders. But he has never run a national campaign before.
