Thousands of Colorado Springs jobs depend upon the defense industry. No doubt, a shiver went through offices around the city Monday when Defense Secretary Robert Gates announced a ten percent cut in the use of Defense and Homeland Security contractors next year.
Secretary Gates also announced the elimination of the Joint Forces Command in Norfolk, Virginia. Its role will be absorbed elsewhere within the Defense Department.
Gates has long said the Pentagon needs to reduce waste and duplication.
The Pentagon is attempting to reduce its budget by $100 billion over the next five years.
