Republican U.S. Sen. John Thune of South Dakota says he's looking at a possible run for president in 2012, but he's a long way from making a decision.
Thune said during a weekly telephone news conference with reporters Wednesday that he's thought about running for president and has discussed the possibility with his wife. However, Thune says he won't decide until sometime next year whether to seek the Republican nomination.
He says many South Dakota residents and some of his Senate colleagues have urged him to consider running for the White House.
Thune faces no opposition in November as he seeks a second Senate term, which has freed him up to travel around the nation to help other Republican Senate candidates.
