The Otero County Sheriff's Department is investigating a case of hay theft.

Sometime between the night of January 3 and the morning of the 4th, officers say someone showed up to a property in Manzanola and stole two tons of hay.

The hay was valued at about $600, which is about double what it was going for last winter. The recent drought which has caused a lack of rain and tight feed supplies is being blamed for those skyrocketing prices, and thefts, across the country.

Anyone caught stealing hay could face misdemeanor theft charges, or more, based on the cash value of the hay stolen.
