Colorado lawmakers and educators say they plan to fight a proposal by the state Board of Education to adopt new teaching standards on Monday to compete for "Race to the Top" education funding.

Educators say Colorado is already adopting its own standards that meet most of the criteria, and there is no reason to start over. State Board of Education member Peggy Littleton says the state is committing to a 29-state compact without knowing all the requirements.

Lt. Gov. Barbara O'Brien is rejecting suggestions Common Core Standards developed by the states amount to nationalizing public education. O'Brien says the compact only sets goals, and local school districts can decide what textbooks to use and how to teach.
