Online system aims to cut teacher license backlog

DENVER (AP) - A Colorado education official says a new online application system should help reduce a backlog in processing applications for teaching licenses.
Jami Goetz of the Office of Professional Services and Educator Licensing says a new system is on track to be fully implemented by July.
She told the state Board of Education last week that her office is evaluating more than 40,000 applications each year with eight employees. The backlog for initial teacher licenses is about six months.
She says the backlog came as the downturn in the economy led more people to return to teaching or apply to become substitute teachers, and recent legislation now requires more fingerprint-based criminal background checks.
