Omega-3's might help protect against a certain type of bowel cancer. Oily fish -- like salmon, herring and sardines -- are a good source of Omega-3 fatty acids.

Now new research from the UK finds a purified form of Omega-3 can cut the number and size of precancerous polyps in the bowel in people who are genetically predisposed to getting bowel cancer. Researchers say the Omega-3's were about as effective as prescription medication, like Celebrex, used to prevent polyps in these patients.

More studies need to be done.
