The Colorado Springs Police Officer who shot and killed a suspect this morning has been placed on leave, pending an investigation.

The shooting happened in the backyard of a home in the 1700 block of Auburn Drive, near Academy and Constitution. According to police a man was shooting a house when officers arrived. The man was told to stop, but he did not. The officer fired once. The suspect was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

"Officers hope to go through their whole career without this type of activity. This is not something officers look forward to having to be involved in, in their careers, although we do train for it and we are prepared to take this kind of action to protect the public," said Sgt. Steve Noblitt.

One block of Auburn Drive is closed, except to residents, as the investigation continues.
