President Barack Obama will address the nation this evening, in a televised speech you'll see on NewsFirst5 at 6 pm, a revised time.

On a visit to Mississippi and Alabama Monday, the president tried to sound both in command and upbeat, saying he's confident the Gulf Coast will eventually be "in better shape than it was before."

Obama toured a Coast Guard staging center and a barrier island, and chowed down on Gulf seafood that he says is safe and delicious.

Today, he's talking to Floridians before his speech stressing the enormous task ahead. Even with two wars and the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression, tonight will be the first time the president's reached for the ultimate bully pulpit -- the Oval Office.

His prime time address reflects his team's conviction he's got to seize the initiative. Word is Obama plans to outline specific steps.
