President Barack Obama meets today with his top commander and top diplomat in Afghanistan.

After numerous discussions via secure video link, the president's sitting down in person with General Stanley McChrystal and Ambassador Karl Eikenberry. The pair will testify on Capitol Hill this week about the Afghanistan troop surge and its 18-month expiration date.

Defense Secretary Robert Gates says by summer 2011, U.S. troops will start coming home.

As Gates did on "NBC's Meet the Press", McChrystal and Eikenberry will back Obama's withdrawal timeframe.

The president's taken shots from liberals doubting the fresh infusion of troops, and from conservatives about his plan to start bringing them home within 18 months.
