WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama is back at the White House after cutting short his Martha's Vineyard vacation ahead of Hurricane Irene's landfall.
The president flew out last night, acknowledging Irene is a massive storm and the prudent thing to do was get back to the White House.
He took his own advice, having warned Americans in Irene's path to take the storm seriously and move quickly on any evacuation order. Aides said it wasn't out of fear he wouldn't be safe here -- just that it would be prudent for HIM to be in Washington when the storm hits.
Now, he's appealing for patience. Obama's been in close contact with governors and mayors in Irene's path, and says he's assured them that after the storm sweeps by, the Feds will be ready with all available aid.
