Nutrition labels for your meat

Mystery meat is a thing of the past. Starting today, the Department of Agriculture is requiring nutrition labels on 40 of the most popular cuts of beef and poultry.

The labels are similar to those shoppers have grown accustom to seeing on items like canned soup and cereal. The meat labels will include calories, saturated fat, cholesterol, vitamins and total carbs; information the USDA says consumers need to know to make informed decisions.

"They (consumers) want to be able to make well informed choices, they want to be able to do that with information that's quick and easy to understand," says Dr. Elisabeth Hagen, Under Secretary for Food Safety with the USDA.

If you don't see the label on the packages, it doesn't mean your local grocer isn't following the rules. Look for the information mounted on a nearby wall at the meat counter. The new requirements don't specify that the information be posted on the individual packages.
