DOVER, Del. (AP) - Public health officials say whooping cough is on the rise in Delaware and across the nation.

Officials said Tuesday that 20 cases of whooping cough, also known as pertussis, have been reported in Delaware this year as of July 31.

That's up from 12 during the same period last year, and officials say reported cases represent only the tip of the iceberg.

Authorities say vaccination is the best protection against whooping cough, which spreads easily by coughing and sneezing and is a serious medical condition for babies and children.
