DENVER (AP) - The Denver Nuggets have picked up the third-year option on Ty Lawson, keeping the speedy point guard under contract through the 2011-12 season.
The team announced the move Thursday night.
Lawson backed up All-Star Chauncey Billups as a rookie last season, averaging 8.3 points and 3.1 assists in 65 games.
The former North Carolina standout was acquired by Denver in a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves on June 25, 2009.
The Nuggets will open the regular season Wednesday night against Utah.
