NORAD has begun tracking Santa as he makes his way across the globe. The website, noradsanta.org, has a live map of Santa's journey, as well as a counter showing the number of gifts delivered.
NORAD began tracking Santa in 1955 when a newspaper ad listed the wrong phone number for kids to call Santa. They wound up calling the Continental Air Defense Command, NORAD's predecessor. Both commands have been based in Colorado Springs.
This year, NORAD's Santa Tracking program raised eyebrows when a promotional video featured fighter jets escorting Santa. Critics of the program accused NORAD of injecting militarism into Christmas. NORAD responded by calling it a "manufactured controversy."
