The general in charge of the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command says he will retire.

Air Force Gen. Gene Renuart said Wednesday he plans leave the military on July 1 after a 39-year career.

NORAD, a joint U.S.-Canada command, monitors air and space threats against both countries. The Northern Command oversees the U.S. military's homeland defense and supports civilian authorities. Both commands are headquartered at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs.

Renuart has been their commander since March 2007. The Defense Department said last month that Navy Vice Adm. James A. Winnefeld Jr. would take over at NORAD and Northern Command. Renuart's plans hadn't previously been made public.
