The North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) will send planes on training flights over Northern California, northern Alberta and southwestern Alaska on Thursday.
NORAD said the planes will practice interception and identification procedures as well as responding to multiple threats.
Officials say most residents won't see or hear the exercise except in the Sacramento area. Residents there may see fighter jets near an Air Force C-21, a small cargo and passenger plane playing the role of a "track of interest."
NORAD, based at Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs, is a joint U.S.-Canadian command that patrols the skies over North America.
