No containment for Shell Fire

The Shell Fire in Las Animas County has zero containment as of this morning, according to Las Animas County Emergency Management. The fire is burning 25,000 acres on both sides of Highway 109 between La Junta and Kim.

The primary focus for today is on the west side of the highway. Seven homes are in that area and right now crews are focused on structure protection.

The Brice Fire, also in Las Animas County, is near full containment, according to Las Animas County Emergency Management. The wildfire burned 3,000 acres Northeast of Kim.

In the same general area, a 400-acre fire is also burning. Las Animas County Emergency Management is concerned this fire could merge with the Callie Marie Fire. Some homes are in the area, and crews are working to establish boundaries in front of them.

70 firefighters are working to fight the flames, including state and county firefighters, as well as volunteers and private landowners. Las Animas County Emergency Management is requesting more hand crews to help with the fires.
