UNION BEACH, N.J. (AP) - New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie says the National Flood Insurance Program is "a disgrace" because it is moving too slowly to process payments to homeowners with damages from Superstorm Sandy.
Christie spoke Tuesday in Union Beach, one of the towns hit hardest by October's storm.
He praised private insurers, saying 85 percent of Sandy-related homeowner claims have been settled.
But he says that only 30 percent of federal flood insurance claims have been resolved more than three months after Sandy.
He's asking New Jersey's congressional delegation to pressure the Federal Emergency Management Agency to do better.
He's also going to require private insurers to respond to consumer complaints within five days.
