News 5 Investigates: Woodland Park mayor arrested for sexual assault of a child

Mayor David Turley was arrested late Thursday night for sexual assault of a child by one in a position of trust.

Turley was booked into the Teller County jail and posted $10,000 bond.

Court papers related to the case have been sealed, and the Woodland Park Police Department will not elaborate on who the victim is and how they learned about the allegations. Authorities did get a search warrant for Turley's home and car and collected evidence, but we don't know exactly what was seized.

The Woodland Park Police Department worked in conjunction with the Colorado Springs Police Department on this investigation.

"The reason I got Colorado Springs police involved was because I realized the suspect was our mayor," Woodland Park Police Chief Bob Larson said. "I wanted another department to look at the case so we would have a fair and objective process."

We stopped by Turley's home for comment, but nobody came to the door.

The city clerk says Turley will continue to be mayor unless he is convicted, or resigns.

"An arrest does not constitute either a vacancy in either the mayor's office or city council," city clerk Cindy Morse said.

The Woodland Park Police Department has turned all its evidence over to the district attorney's office. The department tells News 5 they are only aware of one victim pertaining to this case.

No word yet on whether Turley has hired an attorney.
