New study suggests anesthesia could cause learning disabilities if used before age 2

A new study is out that suggests a potential negative side effect for babies who have to undergo general anesthesia.

Researchers at the Mayo Clinic took a closer look at possible side effects, and they found that people who have had at least two surgeries in which anesthesia was used before age two, were about twice as likely in people who hadn't.

Experts say their study results are too preliminary right now for parents to change necessary treatment for sick children because a single exposure to anesthesia has not been shown to have any detrimental effects in children.

Until more studies are done, researchers say the benefits of surgery, often outweight any potential link between anesthesia and learning problems.
