JOPLIN, Mo. (AP) - As searchers in Missouri and Minnesota comb through the rubble looking for survivors of last night's tornadoes, folks are pitching in to help anyway they can.

A massive tornado tore a 6-mile path across southwestern Missouri killing at least 89 people and damaging about 2,000 homes as it slammed into the city of Joplin. It ripped into a hospital, crushed cars and leveled neighborhoods. One person died when a tornado struck Minneapolis. Authorities imposed a curfew last night in a 4-square-mile area, including some of the city's poorest neighborhoods. A former Missouri state lawmaker says about 1,500 volunteers showed up this morning at Missouri Southern State University to help with the tornado response. Law enforcement officers from neighboring towns and counties are helping man major intersections, as rescuers moved carefully around downed power lines and jagged debris to conduct a door-to-door search.

Their task was made more miserable as a new thunderstorm with strong winds, heavy rain pelted the city with quarter-sized hail.
