New police and sheriff monitor named in Denver

Denver Mayor Michael Hancock has chosen commercial litigator Nicholas E. Mitchell to be the city's next independent monitor of its police and sheriff's departments, pending approval by the City Council.

Mitchell was chosen after a previously named finalist declined the appointment to remain with the Los Angeles Office of Independent Review. Former Independent Monitor Richard Rosenthal left earlier this year for a similar post in British Columbia.

Mitchell will monitor and participate in investigations of employees of the police and sheriff's departments. He also will make recommendations regarding discipline and disciplinary policy issues.

Mitchell said Tuesday he would investigate allegations of misconduct aggressively but fairly.

His background includes serving as an investigator for the New York City Civilian Complaint Review Board, which reviews allegations of police misconduct.
