PETERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Colo. (AP) - The new military commander responsible for defending the U.S. homeland says Mexico is "part of our North American family" and important to the United States.

Army Gen. Charles H. Jacoby Jr. said Friday that the U.S. and Mexico are both dealing with the threat of international drug traffickers.

Jacoby took over the North American Aerospace Defense Command and the U.S. Northern Command last month. He says effective military-to-military relations with Mexico are important.

He says the U.S. military plays a supporting role in the U.S. relationship with Mexico. He says the U.S military's role is to help provide what U.S. diplomats say is needed.

Northern Command is responsible for the military defense of U.S. soil and supporting civilian agencies in disasters. NORAD is responsible for guarding North America from air and space threats.
