All of the talk by politicians in Washington about jobs and the economy isn't doing a bit of good. The number of newly laid-off workers filing unemployment claims last week rose to 480,000.

The rise is the fourth in the past five weeks. The four-week average, which smooths fluctuations, rose for the third straight week.

The number of people continuing to claim benefits was unchanged at 4.6 million. That number does not include people who've taken part-time jobs to "get bay" until they find full-time work.
