An escaped prison inmate was captured in a modular home where he was holding a woman hostage, according to the Colorado Department of Corrections. That information is dramatically different from what was originally reported, that Douglas Alward was apprehended in a corn field.
The hostage was not injured.
Alward had been on the run since Sunday when he escaped from a maximum security prison in Sterling. His capture was in nearby Yuma County in northeastern Colorado.
The dangerous inmate was serving a 20 - 40-year sentence for attempted murder, assault, burglary and kidnapping.
Officials called his escape elaborate, but did not release details.
He had escaped three previous times. In 1991 he overpowered a courtroom guard with another prisoner. Alward was eventually caught, but not before kidnapping two people and opening fire on police.
