A new system to detect explosives in checked bags will be installed at the Colorado Springs Airport.

The new system will consist of an automated baggage belt system that will send checked baggage through Explosive Detection System machines. CT scans will detect explosives and other potentially hazardous materials.

To make room for installation of the new system, checked baggage screening will be in the airport ticket lobby. Installation will take about 18 months.

Total cost of equipment, construction and installation is estimated at $20 million. The cost will be shared by the TSA and the airport.
