A major new rehab effort started Friday at the Hayman burn area. This time it is to deal destruction caused by water.
It has been nine years since the fire scorched around 137-thousand acres. There has been successful reseeding and replanting efforts, yet erosion continues to get worse along more than 150 miles of waterways.
Work starts at one of the worst spots for erosion along trail creek in Douglas County, Colorado. Dave Rosgen, who is a leading expert in restoring streams and rivers, has created a plan to build stream beds back up. "What we're doing now is returning the stream back in time and space to what it was before the fire and before the impairment," said Rosgen.
The promise is this will reduce the amount of sediment washing away by 80-percent.
