More details are coming out about the fatal shooting of a 14-year-old girl in Colorado Springs on Monday.
The Alamosa Courier has reported that the young woman who was killed is Kiana O'Neil, her stepfather told police that he shot her when he mistook her for a burglar as she crawled into a basement window early Monday morning. The O'Neil's stepfather has be identified as a 2nd Lt. Daniel Meade, a decorated veteran serving at Fort Carson.
"I love everything especially food and crazy hairstyles im a total nerd and always will be," Kiana O'Neil wrote in a description of herself on her Pinterest page.
On Facebook a memorial page for O'Neil has been established where family, friends and even strangers have offered condolences and some memories of her.
"It is so nice to see that so many people cared about you," her aunt posted. "I will always love you and forever miss you until we meet again."
In media around the world Kiana's death has stirred debate over gun rights and Colorado's "make my day" law, on the memorial page her mother asked that her daughter's tragic death not be a part of a heated political issue.
"We will not let our daughter's passing turn into a political debate," her mother wrote. "We are united in love and respect for one another at this time."
Fellow students at Vista Ridge High School, where O'Neil was a freshman, are planning to wear purple to class on Jan. 7 in her memory.
The 4th Judicial District Attorney's Office has yet to decide whether O'Neil's stepfather will face charges related to the shooting.
