Colorado Springs welcomes a new deputy fire chief, the first African American to achieve that rank in this city.

Tommy Smith paid tribute to his father, who died a little over a week ago. Smith said his father grew up in South Carolina and as a boy wasn't allowed to look a white man in the eyes because it was considered disrespectful. "He taught us to hold your head high and when you see people look them in the eye. Let them know you're worthy of their respect and that you respect them."

Smith replaces Deputy Chief Dan Raider, who just retired.
