FORT CARSON, Colo. (AP) - Fort Carson's new commander says Army training at the Pinon Canyon Maneuver Site is vital for the safety of soldiers in combat.

Maj. Gen. Joseph Anderson on Friday reiterated the Army's position that it won't try to expand Pinon Canyon for at least five years.

Anderson said that opposing all training at Pinon Canyon would be almost unpatriotic - but that he was unaware of any such opposition.

Previous efforts to expand Pinon Canyon angered some local residents, who said it would hurt the agricultural economy.

The Army had said more land was needed for additional troops and new weapons and tactics. But in March, the Army said the expansion effort was being paused.
