Colorado has named its newest school after a soldier killed in Iraq.

The new Weikel Elementary School is named for Ian Weikel, a graduate of Fountain-Fort Carson High School who was killed in action in Iraq in 2006. Weikel was a star athlete in high school who attended the U.S. Military Academy at West Point.

Colorado State Treasurer Cary Kennedy said the new school was built under a new state law that uses revenue earned from School Trust Lands to fund school building repair, renovation, and replacement.
