Neighbors shocked by sex assault arrest

Neighbors who live near a Colorado Springs man arrested Wednesday on charges of sexual assault on a child say they are shocked by the accusation. Many described Murray Basinger, 53, as a friendly guy who organized the annual neighborhood block party.

"It doesn't necessarily worry me so much just because my children are very diligent about watching each other," said neighbor Todd Petersen. "But it is a little scary that something like that could happen so close to home."

Deputies with the El Paso County Sheriff's Office took Basinger into custody following an investigation into claims that he sexually assaulted two young girls between the ages of 7 and 9 while they were staying at his home six years ago.

Basigner's wife was apparently babysitting the girls, but was either running errands or asleep when the alleged abuse occurred. Detectives believe it happened on multiple occassions over a period of months.

The sheriff's office is requesting that any other potential victims contact Detective Greg White at 719-520-7246.
