Neighbors shocked by Pueblo County girl's death

Authorities in Pueblo County are not saying how eight-year-old Desirea French died. The body of the second grader was found in her mobile home by her grandfather last night. He also found Desirea's father, John French, Jr., who had been shot. The father is expected to recover. Desirea's mother lives in Kansas.

Desirea and her Dad lived at the Meadowbrook Mobile Home Park on Highway 96. Neighbors describe the father and daughter as friendly, saying Desirea often played outside, and her father could be seen working on cars or taking care of his home. Neighbor Arthur Fields is appalled by Desirea's death, "The children are the worst. They have no way to defend themselves. That's what we're here for....to protect them and when you can't do that, it makes it tough."

Desirea attended second grade at Avondale Elementary School. Counselors and psychologists are at the school today to help kids and staff cope with her loss.

More information is expected this afternoon from the Pueblo County Sheriff's Office.
